Multiply Week 1: What is a disciple?

As we start the Multiply series we first must understand what a disciple is. What a disciple meant in Jesus’ time and what it means for us today.

A disciple is someone who would spend all their time with the Rabbi, they would eat, sleep, and serve with the Rabbi, watching and learning everything they did. They would watch them comfort and counsel, see how they interacted with the angry or hurting. This relationship existed so the disciple could step up in the Rabbi’s absence. When the Rabbi passed the Disciple could continue his ministry EXACTLY the way the Rabbi had.

Christ mirrors this relationship when he first calls the disciples. The 12 spent every day with Christ and watched how he interacted, how he comforted, and how he taught. This structure existed so the disciples could do exactly what Christ had done when he was gone. See the relationship ensures the continued knowledge of God’s people.

Each on of us is called in the same way the disciples were, “Pick up your cross and follow me” You are a child of God and you are a disciple of Christ. We must first spend time in prayer and in the Word so we can be more and more like Christ.
